Edmonton Overseeding

Seeding your lawn is a key and beneficial service for lawns in Edmonton and surrounding areas. It has many key benefits but really helps to repair thin patches and help grow your lawn thicker. For seed to germinate, there needs to be a seed to soil contact for that to happen. Once the seed is embedded in the soil, within a few weeks the seed will start to grow with good water and fertilizer. To be able to get the seed to soil contact, it’s best to aerate first before seeding or rake out the dead grass so that the seed can be on the soil.

The best time of the year to seed is during the growing season of cool season grasses which is spring and fall. In spring when the grass is growing fast, it’s a great time to get some new grass growing before the summer heat takes over. In the fall is even better since it’s another growing season and the seed will get embedded into the soil better with all the snow and moisture. If you are interested in having a complimentary seed bag with your lawn care program, reach out to our team today!

How we do it

In western Canada and specifically Edmonton, the type of grass here is Kentucky Bluegrass, Red Fescue and Rye Grass. What’s important is the quality of the grass seed, it should be a seed blend with no filler and the main blends should be Kentucky bluegrass, red fescue and rye grass. Making sure you get a quality blend is super important to make sure it germinates but also blends in with your existing lawn. We make sure to research and invest in the proper seed for climates here in Edmonton.

In our lawn care packages of the St. Bernard and Great Dane, they both include two complimentary seed bags (one for spring and fall). Once you receive those bags, you can apply as little or as much that’s needed by hand. Please make sure to follow the directions on the bag for best results. The bags are 1kg each and are enough to cover 500 square feet of area. They are both complimentary and are included with those two upper packages.

FAQ

Depending where we are in the season grass will begin growing from the seeds in 2-3 weeks. You can expect a 50 - 90% germination with our seed.

You want the soil of the newly seeded area to stay moist every day. To ensure the top inch of the lawn is moist, you should water the area with a sprinkler for 30 minutes, twice daily (once in the morning, once at night) until the lawn has grown enough to be mowed for the first time. If a heat wave occurs during this time, increase the watering to 3-4 times per day to ensure the soil stays moist during the extreme heat.

Until the grass has grown long enough to be mowed for the first time.

If we do an aeration and overseed that yields poor growth results, we will first check all of the factors:

- How often were you watering?
- Did any pets, children, or wild life disrupt the physical conditions of the seed?
- Is there a deeper problem at hand, such has poor soil conditions or extreme weather?

We will work with you to find the solution and if needed we will seed and soil the area again free of charge. We want your lawn to achieve great success with our programs and will stick through it with you.

The Benefits of Overseeding

For lawns in Edmonton, we recommend seeding at least once a year. It’s a good practise to ensure your lawn always stays thick and green. Another key benefit is having the grass choke out the weeds. When you seed your lawn and it becomes thicker, that makes it harder for dandelions to receive adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients. There are many key benefits of seeding your lawn in Edmonton, but it’s extremely important to make sure that you get seed to soil contact as well as getting a good quality seed.
