The client first came to us in April of 2020, she mentioned that her lawn had been neglected for two years. The last time it was aerated and fertilized was in 2018 when she hired a door-to-door company do the work. She explained over the phone that the lawn has been getting watered and mowed regularly but hasn’t been greening up the way she had hoped. She mentioned that the front lawn had a couple bare patches from the voles over the wintertime. Being on a corner lot, she was tired of everyone driving by and looking at the neglected lawn.
She gave Yard Dawgs a call and explained what she needed, what her budget was and what the process would look like. Yard Dawgs was able to find the package that she needed, the St. Bernard package, and do the first visit to her property 7 days after booking in. The St. Bernard package is our best selling package and includes season long fertilizer, unlimited weed control, super juice, aeration and overseeding.
This package was perfect for her because she needed the basics of the weed control and fertilizer. However, since the lawn had been neglected for a while, the aeration and overseeding would really help thicken the lawn up and help it breathe again. Super juice is the ultimate soil enhancer that makes sure that soil is healthy and promotes good root growth.
On May 7th, the first service was a spring aeration. This was arguably the most beneficial service to get the lawn looking much better. This helped to de compact the lawn, making it available to more nutrients like water and oxygen, and help to promote deeper root growth. Between May 7th and 11th, there was heavy rainfalls in Calgary which was perfect for this lawn. Watering after an aeration is very beneficial and even better when mother nature does it for you.
On May 13th, the next round of services came, including the Spring fertilizer, super juice and overseed. The fertilizer is high in nitrogen which helps the lawn green up. It is also slow release which means that it will last for 8-12 weeks afterwards. The overseed combined with some complementary topsoil really helped the lawn fill in the bare spots, to eventually grow into a beautiful thick green lawn. As you may notice in the before picture, the topsoil is embedded with the seed inside of it. Making the germination rate much higher then just spreading seed on top of grass. The aeration completed earlier really helps the seed germinate, as the aeration opens the lawns and adds a layer of topsoil with the recycled cores. The super juice played a critical role in ensuring the soil remains healthy and breaking down any clay soil. The super juice is a vital factor for ensuring the soil beneath the grass is healthy.
The technician included watering instructions in the post service email, she was able to easily follow them and stick to a regular watering schedule. Over the next several weeks, Calgary received a lot of rain and the fertilizer was really starting to work well. On May 20th, another service visit was performed, it was the weed control to eliminate any existing weeds. Over the next couple months, Yard Dawgs had completed the spring work and was set to return in the summer. The customer kept up with regular watering and mowing, ensuring the fertilizer and other services received the maximum benefits. She made sure the lawn received one inch of water per week and that it was being cut at a height of 3” every week. Everything was going well, and she could soon start to see the green grass coming in and really making a nice compliment to her home. Her neighbors started taking note of her lawn and was constantly getting asked what she did to make it look so nice.
The next service visit was performed on July 28th, about two and a half months after the first fertilizer. It was the same lawn technician that did the work on May 13th and he couldn’t believe the results that he saw. He remembered the first time he visited how compacted the turf was and all the bare spots that existed. He thought it would be improved but he never thought it would get to where it’s at. He credits the aeration and overseed to helping rejuvenate the lawn and making sure its not compacted. The super juice helped with the soil because in Calgary they can have a lot of clay content which isn’t good for lawns.
The fertilizer was applied both on May 7th and July 28th to make sure the lawn was constantly being fed and had adequate amounts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. With the customer doing her part with watering and mowing regularly, she was able to have one of the best lawns on the block!
