Calgary’s Laboratory Soil Testing Services

Soil testing is a vital service to get a great idea of where your lawn’s soil is at right now. As well as what you could add or take away in future lawn care services. Think of it as like a blood test for humans, the soil test will be able to tell you what your lawns pH is, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulfur, magnesium, and iron. Typically, in Alberta, our lawns tend to have a very high pH (alkaline soil) around 8.0 to 8.5. The best way to alleviate that is by using Elemental Sulfur to help lower the pH to a neutral range. Lawns that are either too high or too low on the pH scale will not be able to utilize nutrients properly and will have a tough time growing. Here at Yard Dawgs, we recommend doing a soil test if your lawn simply is not growing and you’ve been doing all the proper mowing, watering, and fertilizer treatments. A lab soil tests can help to see if there’s any underlying condition in your soil.

How Our Soil Tests Work

At Yard Dawgs, we take immense pride in our work and make sure that each soil test is taken to a testing lab. We take each soil test and ship it off to a professional soil testing laboratory in Anaheim, California. After they do the test, we will email you the results and provide a guide as to what the test results mean. If you order a soil test, our technicians will take between 3-7 samples in your front, side, and back lawn to get an adequate sample. Once that’s done, our team will mail it off and within about 2 weeks you will get your results back.

Soil Testing Common Questions

You ask, we answer.

A soil tests won't give your lawn any immediate benefits. However, it will show you the current nutrient levels and which ones in the suggested range and which ones you need more or less of. From there once you make those suggested adjustments, your lawn should be in much better condition.

To get a good sample of soil, we need to take between 3-7 probes in your front, side yard and back yard from all areas. We do not just pull samples from the front, we pull them from all areas on the lawn.

Soil Testing Results And What To Do With Them

Once you receive the soil test back, it will show you the exact amount in parts per million for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulfur, and other micronutrients. With that data it will compare it to the optimal range, and you will directly see if you have enough or don’t have enough. As an example, if it says the potassium levels are super low, we’d suggest adding a winterize fertilizer since that has higher levels of potassium. Another key reading in the soil test will be the pH rating, like most lawns in Calgary they come back usually between 8.0 to 8.5. Since that’s an alkaline soil, we recommend using an acetifying product to help lower the pH such as Elemental Sulfur. There are many things we can take away from soil tests to help improve your lawn and to help diagnose the root cause of what’s going on.
